Today we celebrate my mom on her birthday. For the most part, she never really liked her birthday being in January - it's cold and drab (in Michigan at least). But I, for one, love that we get to celebrate my mom's birthday right off in the beginning of the year. It gives us something to look forward to a few weeks after the holidays and it's a great way to kick off the celebration of life! She was, in fact, the one who changed my point of view on birthdays. I used to hate the fuss on my own birthday and didn't like the idea of growing up - but she made a point and forever changed my point of view on them when she said we're the lucky ones; many people don't make it to see another year. In growing older, you gain knowledge, life experiences, memories and every day we get is another opportunity to make a change for the better. So in this post, we celebrate you, mom! Happy happy birthday!! Thank you for all of the life lessons. Sharing some of my favorite photos - sometimes simply for the outfit because dang, she's got style! The little runt here, at roughly 2 years of age, looked more like grandma Ofelia with the perm than her father, grandpa Charlie, whom she mostly grew up to resemble. Rocking Bell Bottoms in her teens! A trend I later copied in the 2000's in my teens. Big hair and platform heels leaning on my dad's car! So on trend right now with the army green, basket weave purse, high waist pants and head scarf. I'm still trying to figure out how to make a head scarf look good and natural... Tan wool sweater, beanie with matching stripe, red accent gloves, and Ray Ban aviators. Making a wintery trip to the ocean side look glam. Everything about this - the dress, the sandals, the shades, the head scarf (again)... Kinda jealous about those ice cream cones, but also those Nike kicks. Love this picture because of the sheer joy. We lovingly call mom "Smother", perhaps not so coincidentally, a trait my sister also inherited. ![]() And though I skipped several decades with this final image, you wouldn't be able to tell much. Thank you for teaching us to take care of our skin, live healthily, stay active, and be happy! We love you!

Oh, my! You have been my teachers from the moment you were born. As a mother, I made great mistakes that I regret deeply and despite of them you and Ilse grew to be two wonderful human beings. I'm very proud of you. Thank you Maws, I am sure you're going to be a terrific mom yourself. I grateful for each year I get to live and this coming one you are giving me the most wonderful gift, a grandson! Love you with all my heart. ❤️❤️❤️
